Plitvice Lakes National Park is about 250 km from Split, which means a 2.5 to 3-hour drive each way. A day trip requires an early start and can be long. Is it worth it? For most travelers, yes. The park has 16 terraced lakes connected by waterfalls and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Its scenery is unlike anything else in Croatia. After ten years of selling this trip, this is the advice we give at the desk: real timings, 2026 ticket prices from the official source, and when Krka might be a better choice.
Plitvice is just one of the major excursions featured in our main guide to day trips from Split. If you are still planning your itinerary, start there first.

How Far Is Plitvice from Split?
Here are the basic facts you need to know first:
- The distance is approximately 250 km each way.
- Driving time is 2.5 to 3 hours each way on the A1 motorway. It can take longer during summer traffic near the park.
- A guided tour from Split usually takes 12 to 13 hours from start to finish, with about 4 to 5 hours spent inside the park.
That’s the trade-off: you spend five to six hours traveling to see what many consider the most beautiful place in Croatia. Guests who know this in advance almost always say it was worth it. Those who expect a quick trip could be disappointed. If a three-hour drive is too much, Krka is only an hour away and is a great alternative. You can find more about it in our full Krka guide.
What Makes Plitvice Special
Plitvice is made up of 16 terraced lakes, divided into Upper and Lower Lakes. They are connected by waterfalls and cascades, created by travertine barriers that continue to grow.
Upper Lakes
Twelve lakes sit in thick beech and fir forests, connected by easy boardwalks that wind between many small cascades. This part of the park feels peaceful and magical, and it is usually less crowded.
Lower Lakes
Four lakes lie in a striking limestone canyon, including Veliki Slap, the park’s tallest waterfall at about 78 meters. The viewpoints here are where most postcard photos are taken, and this area attracts the largest crowds.
Routes
The park offers marked walking routes: most take 2 to 4 hours for one section, or 4 to 6 hours to see both the Upper and Lower Lakes. Electric boats cross Lake Kozjak, and a panoramic train connects the ends. Both are included in your entrance ticket price. For a day trip from Split, a route that covers both sections in 4 to 5 hours is usually the best option.

What does a guided tour include?
The guided tour costs €75 (not including the park ticket) and includes air-conditioned transport, pickup at a meeting point, and a guide who chooses the best walking route based on the day’s crowds and weather.
Tickets and entrances
Official 2026 one-day ticket prices are 40 euros for adults from June 1st to September 30th. Afternoon prices are a bit lower for the same group of people, €23. Children up to 7 years old can get free entrance.
For the best experience, visit from June to September, and enter the park before 9:00 or after 15:00. The park offers a late-afternoon price B discount because midday is the busiest time.
Private tour
Our private transfer service from Split to Plitvice costs €378 per vehicle (for 1 to 3 passengers, about 2 hours and 40 minutes), with luggage in the trunk. You can explore the lakes at your own pace while the driver waits, then continue north. This option costs more than a coach tour, but you save a full day of travel and get to see Plitvice in the morning before the midday crowds.
