Split area is the adventure capital of the Dalmatian coast. Within an hour of the Riva, you can zip across a river canyon, abseil down waterfalls, paddle a sea kayak beneath Marjan’s cliffs, or drive a buggy along mountain trails at 1,100 meters. Most active tours from Split last half a day, cost €50 to €130 per person with all equipment included, and require no previous experience. Here’s our local guide to each one, including what it feels like, who it’s best for, and how to choose the right adventure for your group.

Zip line Omiš: fly over the Cetina canyon
If you want the biggest views for the least physical effort, this is your tour. The Omiš zip line is a course of 8 wires totaling 2.1 km, strung up to 150 meters above the Cetina canyon, with speeds up to 65 km/h. After a short hike to the course and a safety briefing with a practice wire, you spend around three hours zipping from cliff to cliff while the river glitters far below.
The best part is how accessible it is: the minimum age is just 6, the weight limit is 140 kg, and you only need to be able to walk between wires. This makes it one of the few adrenaline activities that a whole three-generation family can enjoy together. Transfer from Split, full equipment, and training are included in the €100 price. The course runs in almost any weather, so it’s a great backup plan if wind or rain cancels your boat trip.
Canyoning on the Cetina: the adventure you’ll talk about for years
Canyoning is the most immersive way to experience the Cetina. Instead of rafting over the river or flying above it, you actually travel through it. Wearing a neoprene suit, helmet, and life jacket, you walk, swim, slide, and jump your way down the canyon. Along the way, you’ll see natural pools with incredibly clear water, rock walls up to 180 meters high, underground channels, and the highlight: the view of Gubavica, a 50-meter waterfall.
You don’t need any experience for the standard route. Guides will brief you at the start in Omiš, which is about 40 minutes from Split and offers an optional transfer. The activity itself takes three to four hours. If your group is feeling confident, you can upgrade to extreme canyoning, which adds two rope descents of 53 and 18 meters down the cliffs. At €90 per person, with equipment and insurance included, we think this is the most memorable half-day you can spend in the Split hinterland.
If canyoning feels a bit too intense, rafting on the same river lets you enjoy the Cetina’s rapids, and cliff jumps from the safety of a raft. It’s a gentler option at €60, but still a real adventure.
Sea kayaking: Split from the water, at your own pace
Not every active tour has to get your heart racing. Our sea kayaking tour starts on the western side of Split’s port and follows the southern shore of Marjan forest park. It’s a 9-kilometer paddle past pine-covered cliffs, hidden coves, and views of the old town with Diocletian’s Palace. You’ll see the hermitage cliffs and beaches of Marjan from a sea perspective.
The tour lasts three hours in stable double sit-on-top kayaks and only requires a low level of fitness. Kids from age 8 can join, and you’ll use certified equipment with local guides registered with the Croatian mountain rescue service. At €50, it’s the most affordable tour on this list and our top pick for your first morning in Split. You’ll get your bearings, enjoy a swim, and fit in a workout before lunch. If you prefer wheels to paddles, the Marjan loop by bike or e-scooter covers similar ground from the land.
Quad & buggy adventure: the hinterland at full throttle
The quad and buggy tour is perfect for travelers who have already explored the coast and want to see a side of Dalmatia that most visitors miss. The panoramic route takes you through Podstrana’s landscape and up Perun Hill, where you’ll enjoy sweeping views from the Hvar archipelago across Brač, Šolta, and Vis to Čiovo and Trogir. There’s also a longer mountain route that runs between Muć and Ogorje, reaching 1,139 meters on Svilaja. You’ll experience fresh mountain air, gravel roads, and villages.
The drive itself takes about two and a half hours, and the tour ends in true Dalmatian style at a traditional tavern, where you can taste local specialties while enjoying the panoramic view. Drivers must be at least 18 years old with a valid license, and passengers are welcome to ride along. The €130 price includes the vehicle, helmet, guide, insurance, and snacks. Both morning and afternoon departures are available, and afternoon rides offer softer light for photos.
How to choose the right adventure
Here are a few tips from our years of helping guests choose tours.
Traveling with kids? The zip line (from age 6) and kayaking (from age 8) are your safest options.
Want to impress your friends? Try canyoning, or add the extreme option if you’re feeling brave.
Short on time? Both kayaking and quads fit into a three-hour window and leave your afternoon free. If it’s windy and boats are canceled, the zip line still runs, and the quad trails in the hinterland are sheltered from the wind.
For groups with different comfort levels, you can split up in Omiš: some can go rafting, others canyoning, and everyone can share stories over lunch. Whatever you pick, book a day or two ahead in July and August. Small-group departures fill fast. And remember every tour on this list cancels up to 24 hours before, so there’s no risk in reserving early. Browse all our active tours or message us your group size and we’ll match you to the right one.
